About Interest: Poetry as Prayer and Process

Throughout this group, participants will be given the opportunity to explore the art of poetry as a path to prayer and as a way to process throughout their healing journey. As a group, we will explore and read texts, including Scripture, books, song lyrics, poems, etc. and use these texts as points of discussion and to cultivate themes for the session. Members will be given the space and time to process and to write their own original poems. Group members will be offered generative writing prompts that allow them to craft their own poems and they will be offered space and opportunity to share with the group.

About the Leader

Barbara Fant is a native to Youngstown Ohio, but recently moved to Glendale, California. She first became connected to ONE when visiting LA, but in 2020, during the pandemic, she started virtually attending weekly and became involved in the Women’s Ministry and joined a small group. In her previous small group which she also co-led, she described it to be a wonderful experience and since joining the ministry, she has seen wonderful fruit in her life.

For a living, Barbara has a range of gifts as she is a writer, poet, facilitator and currently works for a local Non-profit Organization as an Artistic Director. She comes from a close knit, loving family and has one sister and niece.

If she had to choose a character from a movie or tv show to best describe herself, she would choose Sidney from Brown Sugar due to her love for poetry similarly to the way she fell in love with Hip Hop in the movie and she often sees the world through that lens. Her go-to karaoke song is “Bills, Bills, Bills,” by Destiny’s Child because of the fabulous on-the-beat dance moves she can bring to her performance and her favorite tv show of all time is the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Barbara’s favorite vacation spot would be somewhere in sunny West Africa because she loves the people, food and culture and it just feels like home.
